The forms may be classic and familiar, but the finished work of ceramic sculptor Bruce Riggs takes clay from earth to art. Using traditional techniques, Bruce creates open jars, closed jars, urns and wall hangings where the process itself is visible.

Much of the character of the pieces comes from the firing. This is done in an anagama, a wood-fired kiln that is built partially underground. The lengthy firing process, which can last up to 14 days and burn up to 20 cords of wood, the temperature and the wood ash are what give each piece unique textures and colors.
